The Potential of Alnylam

For this post I want to take a look into another stock in my portfolio. This one is Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (ALNY). This is one of my favorite stocks and it offers a lot of potential. Potential that can be dangerous as far as risk and return. First, a little summary of what they do straight from Google Finance:

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Alnylam) is a biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics based on ribonucleic acid interference (RNAi). The Company is building a pipeline of RNAi therapeutics. Alnylam’s lead program is in Phase I clinical trials for the treatment of human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. In pre-clinical development programs, the Company is working on an RNAi therapeutic for the treatment of another respiratory infection, influenza, with Novartis Pharma AG (Novartis). Independently, Alnylam is also developing an RNAi therapeutic for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. The Company has additional pre-clinical discovery programs for RNAi therapeutics for the treatment of a range of diseases, including Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease (HD), neuropathic pain, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), Ebola virus infection and cystic fibrosis (CF).

Through my own study of RNAi I found it to be really interesting and intriguing. We are in need of big scientific breakthroughs and I like this area of science.

I owned it at $21 and $16 and have been pleased as of late. However, I am not clear on how well they're progressing and if investors will get bored of waiting and leave or be excited and pump money in. On a positive note, they have many strategic partnerships, though they lost Merck who went ahead and bought a competitor of Alnylam. That may sound bad, but I think it will allow for Alnylam to look into partnerships with another major company and/or be bought by a major pharma company. I don't know what is going to happen, obviously, but I am suggesting you to do a little research and see if you can find a nice little connection to the stock and yourself. This may have risen to high to fast and may have to come down a little before it proceeds up again.

Again, please let me know if you invest in this, if you have your own picks, and please share any thoughts you may have. Thank you and enjoy!

By the way, if you are interested in skateboards, Silhouette Boards has come out with there first board. Cost is $40 and I have some for you. They look really tight. Visit them at www.myspace.com/silhouetteboards, but let me know...I got the hook up!

Pimp the Market with Nuance Communications

I would like to share Nuance Communications (NUAN) as the first stock pick for my blog. I had kept my eye on this stock since Februaury, and finally purchased it in August at $15.36. I have been pleased ever since. It closed today at $19.92.

Nuance is a leading company in the speech recognition and imaging solutions arena. This field has and will continue to grow tremendously. Nuance has made 4 significant transactions (from my research) in 2007 alone and will probably continue building up a network of partners and businesses in the coming years. The technology is in growing demand. Speech recognition is becoming a bigger need with the emergence of hands-free technology, certain computer software, call centers, helthcare services, etc.

I personally see no slowing down in this field or company for that matter. As the technology gets better, more and more businesses may replace certain functions with voice recognition services. If you get a chance look further into Nuance Communications. It is owned largely by institutions which is a major plus as well. Look out for there earnings reports in the coming quarters, as they will only get better and better. You can use the link I have given you to google.com's finance page so you can read more if you would like. It is a very interesting company that I would keep my eye on.

Random rant of the day: What is up with vending machines always short changing you! They always take a dime here and a dime there from everybody and they know nobody will say anything individually because it is not worth each persons time. Damn things. I would put my money in all vending machines if I could!

Please post comments on your thoughts or picks and we can discuss them. Or we can talk about other random stuff. It's up to you.
